Fellowships

Internal University Dissertation Completion Fellowships

There are additional funding packages for Humanities PhD students in the sixth year and beyond, including both Department- and Division-awarded Dissertation Completion Fellowships. Departmental PhD students have a very good track record in securing an additional year of funding through these fellowship competitions.

External Dissertation Fellowships

Department of Philosophy PhD students—and University of Chicago PhD students in general—also have a very good track record in obtaining external dissertation-phase fellowships. This is true not only because our students are indeed talented but also because the University’s UChicagoGRAD office offers great support to students applying for these fellowships. Students can work one-on-one with UChicagoGRAD’s fellowship specialists to revise their applications and tailor them to specific fellowships. And UChicagoGRAD has an updated database where Philosophy students can find fellowships of interest.

Bonn Exchange

The Department of Philosophy has developed a Chicago-Bonn exchange program for doctoral students with University of Bonn Philosophy Chair Michael Forster. The exchange program will provide the funds necessary each year for one of our PhD students to spend a research year in Bonn (at a rate comparable to the current level of funding offered by the DAAD scholarship program). A Bonn PhD student will also visit our department each year.

The program is designed to provide a special research opportunity for Chicago PhD students who (1) have special interest in working with specific philosophy faculty at Bonn or (2) have research interests in German philosophy—or more general research interests in German history, culture, arts, and sciences—that will be well served by spending an academic year at Bonn. Advanced students who have passed their topical exams are welcome to apply to the Bonn Exchange.
