PhD Program Funding

Basic Funding Package

Basic Funding Package

Incoming doctoral students receive a comprehensive 6-year funding package to support them in their scholarly and pedagogical training and are eligible to be registered for up to 8 years. The 6-year funding package includes:

  • An academic year stipend (and teaching remuneration)
  • 5 summer stipends
  • Full tuition aid
  • Health insurance premium aid

Renewal of this award is contingent on satisfactory academic progress.  Students are expected to reach candidacy by the start of year 6 to remain in the program. Those students who remain registered in year 7 and/or 8 receive continued financial support, which includes:

  • Full tuition aid
  • Health insurance premium aid

Additional fellowships and awards are available to support language study, conference travel, and research travel. The precise terms of your admission and aid package will be communicated to you upon admission to the Department.

Travel and Research Funding

In 2019-20, the Department of Philosophy will also make available some limited internal conference and research travel funds to students. The Nicholson Center on campus also provides funds for students doing research in England.

The Graduate Council at the University of Chicago also offers funds to support both graduate student travel to academic conferences and also graduate-student-developed conferences and social events here on campus and in Chicago.

Dissertation Funding

Students who do not complete their PhD during the years of their initial funding package may apply for year-long dissertation fellowships. Our students have very good records receiving competitive fellowships funded by the Division of Humanities. The Department of Philosophy also has dissertation fellowship money available for students.
