Visiting Faculty & Scholars

Each year, the Department invites somewhere between two and eleven Visiting Faculty to come teach courses or mini-seminars in order to supplement and round out our course offerings. Most visiting faculty come for one full quarter and teach two courses over that time, while some teach one only course and others visit over two or three quarters and may teach up to four courses. Finally, some come for only a handful of weeks and teach the equivalent of a full quarter's course over a concentrated period of time. Visiting faculty are selected on a number of grounds: sometimes to fill out some part of our basic curriculum while a regular faculty member is on leave, sometimes to provide courses which we are otherwise not able to offer, and sometimes simply because there is popular demand to have a particular individual come give a course in our department.

Each year the department also invites somewhere between two and seven Visiting Scholars and Post-doctoral Fellows, who are supported by outside funding for research and work with one of the members of the department. Visiting Scholars and Fellows are expected to contribute to the life of the department by engaging with faculty and students through workshops and conversation.
