2022-2023
- Michael Kremer has been awarded the 2022 Rogers Prize, the annual prize for the best article published in British Journal for the History of Philosophy.
- Jonathan Lear's book Imagining the End, which was named one of the top twenty non-fiction books of 2022 by The Washington Post, reviewed by the Post. as well. He also won the Sigmund Freud Award (2023) given by the American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians and gave the the Karl Abraham Lecture at the Berlin Psychoanalytical Society.
- Martha C. Nussbaum has been awarded the 2022 International Balzan Prize. The Balzan Prize is awarded “to scholars and scientists who have distinguished themselves in their fields on an international level.” Please follow this link to read about her accomplishment. She also won the 2022 Spinoza Prize given by Stichting Internationale Spinozaprijs.

- John Proios and his colleague Patricia Marechal (University of California, San Diego) were awarded a research fellowship for 2023-25 from the Neubauer Collegium for a project on ancient Greek philosophy of race and ethnicity.
2021-2022
- Matt Boyle was named Emerson & Grace Wineland Pugh Professor of Humanities.

- Matthias Haase was awarded the university-wide Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring.
- Michael Kremer had a visiting fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford for the 2021-22 academic year.
- Martha C. Nussbaum received a honorary degree from Harvard University, May 2021.
- Josef Stern was the Jacob and Joyce Z. Greenberg Visiting Professor of Jewish Studies in the Department of Philosophy at UChicago during the Winter Quarter 2022. This was the second half of his visiting professorship. He taught remotely as the Greenberg Visiting Professor in Spring 2021.
2020-2021
- Martha C. Nussbaum Receives Order of Lincoln Award. Governor JB Pritzker announced the 2022 recipients of the Order of Lincoln, the state's highest honor for professional achievement and public service.
- In 2021, the French government has promoted Arnold Davidson to the rank of Commandeur--the highest rank--in the order of knighthood of which he is a member, the Ordre des Palmes Académiques. This honor was conferred for his exceptional contribution to the teaching and promotion of French thought and culture.
- Martha C. Nussbaum has won the 2021 Holberg Prize—one of the largest international awards given to an outstanding researcher in the arts and humanities, the social sciences, law, or theology. Her latest book Citadels of Pride: Sexual Abuse, Accountability, and Reconciliation, was published in May 2021.
- Anton Ford won a Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
- John Proios (Cornell) will join the department in Autumn 2021 as an assistant professor.
- Nicolas Garcia Mills will join the department in the 2021-22 academic year as the John and Daria Barry Postdoctoral Fellow.
2019-2020
- Agnes Callard is one of the two joint winners of the 2020 Leibowitz Prize from the APA and Phi Beta Kappa. You can read the story here.
- Matthias Haase was awarded a Franke Institute for the Humanities Fellowship.

- Jonathan Lear has been elected to the American Philosophical Society.

- Agnes Callard has been selected for the Bobbi Josephine Hernandez-Sze AM 1993 and Morgan Chia-Wen Sze MBA 1993 Teaching Award. This award acknowledges excellence in teaching in College courses in the Division of the Humanities and is intended to identify and honor faculty who guide the intellectual development of undergraduate students through exceptional teaching and mentoring.

- Martha C. Nussbaum has won the 2018 Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture. This $1 million award recognizes “humanistic thinkers whose ideas have helped us find direction, wisdom and improved self-understanding in a world being rapidly transformed by social, technological, political, cultural and economic change.”
- Daniel Moerner (Yale) and Ginger Schultheis (MIT) will join the department in Autumn 2019 as assistant professors.

- Candace Vogler was named Chair of Virtue Theory at the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues (2018-2021); she will serve as a Faculty Fellow at the Royal Institute of Philosophy (2018-2021); and she served as a Fulbright Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Notre Dame Australia (2017).

- Arnold I. Davidson will contribute regularly to the Italian newspaper "Il Sole 24 Ore" as jazz critic for the Sunday cultural supplement, "Domenica." The most important cultural section in Italy, "Domenica" will include essays and reviews by Davidson on all aspects of jazz. His collaboration will begin in the Fall.
- Jonathan Lear, the John U. Nef Distinguished Service Professor in the Committee on Social Thought, Philosophy, and the College, has been appointed the Roman Family Director of the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society.
- Josef Stern is the recipient of the 2014 Journal of the History of Philosophy prize for the best book in the history of philosophy published in 2013. By vote of the Board of Directors, the $5,000 prize celebrates his philosophical and scholarly achievement in bringing to light The Matter and Form of Maimonides' Guide (Harvard University Press).
- Josef Stern has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research.

- Maggie Sandholm is one of four graduate students throughout the university this year to receive the Wayne C. Booth Graduate Student Prize for Excellence in Teaching. - Anastasia Berg's paper "Evil or Only Immature? Reconciling Freedom and the Complexity of Moral Evil" was judged to be the best graduate student submission for the year for the Southern Study Group Meeting of NAKS, held at Tulane University in New Orleans, November 9-10, 2017. The award came with a $200 Travel Stipend, and the paper was the Southern Study Group's candidate for the annual Marcus Herz Prize competition.
- Pascal Brixel won a Division of Humanities Vigneron Dissertation Completion Fellowship for 2018-19.
- Arnold Brooks has won the 2018 Dean’s Graduate Student Teaching Excellence Award. Congratulations to Arnold for winning this Division of Humanities-wide competition.
- Charlie Capps presented “Elizabeth Anscombe and the New Natural Lawyers on the First-Person Character of Intention and Human Action,” at “God, Virtue, & Moral Absolutes: Anscombe’s ‘Modern Moral Philosophy’ at 60” (Notre Dame University, January 2018).
- Nethanel Lipshitz taught a Stuart Tave Teaching Fellowship course in the College in Spring 2018. Nethanel also won the Department of Philosophy’s Graduate Student Prize for Excellence in Teaching Philosophy for 2017-18.
- Jessica Tizzard's paper for the Midwest Study Group at the University of Minnesota, "Practical Reason and the Call to Faith," has been awarded the North American Kant Society's Markus Herz Prize for graduate student paper of the year.
2016-2017
- Amichai Amit has won the Department of Philosophy’s Graduate Student Prize for Excellence in Teaching Philosophy for 2016-17.
- Amichai Amit and Thomas Schulte won Ames Dissertation Completion Fellowships for 2017-18.

2015-2016
- Jacob Butcher, Katie Howe, and Rory O’Connell won Ames Dissertation Completion Fellowships for 2016-17.
- Dawn Chow received an honorable mention for the Chicago Center for Teaching's Excellence in Course Design Award for her course "First Year Seminar II: Skepticism," which she taught at the School of the Art Institute in Spring 2016. The Excellence in Course Design Award acknowledges graduate students' accomplishments in the area of course design. In particular, it recognizes graduate student instructors' clear and transparent organization of a course, clearly articulated plans to engage students in the classroom, and demonstrated ability to critically analyze student achievement of stated learning objectives.
- Simon Gurofsky, Dhananjay Jagannathan, Claire Kirwin, Nethanel Lipshitz, and Francey Russell won Division of Humanities Dissertation Completion Fellowships for 2016-17.
- We are delighted to announce that two of our graduate students have been awarded Stuart Tave Teaching Fellowships in the College for 2016-17: Nethanel Lipshitz: Moral Status: Who Deserves Moral Consideration? and Francey Russell: Feminist Moral Psychology.

- Nic Koziolek presented his paper “Belief, Judgment, and Rational Explanation” at the Graduate Conference on Knowing and Acting, at the University of Potsdam, in July. He presented “Inferring as a Way of Knowing” at the Annual Northwest Philosophy Conference, this year at Central Washington University, and at MindGrad, an annual graduate philosophy of mind conference at the University of Warwick.

- Gilad Nir has been awarded a Stuart Tave Teaching Fellowship in the College for the 2015-2016 academic year, for a course "Rules and Originality: A Problem in the Philosophy of Art."

She will present a paper called "The Delusion of Self-Conceit and the Feeling of Respect" at a conference in Leipzig in July.

- Daniel Telech presented "A Virtue of 'Self-Alienation'?" at the "Virtue Ethics Through the Ages" conference at the University of Missouri- St. Louis, in March, and will give comments on Hayley Webster's paper, "Is Wine Tasting Bullshit?" at the 2nd Chicagoland Philosophy Graduate conference, at UIC in April.

- Thomas Hagan has won a George J. Mitchell Scholarship to do post-graduate work in Ireland. Thomas will pursue an MSc in peace and conflict studies at Ulster University, beginning in the fall of 2024.
