The Department offers the following summer stipends to graduate students subject to the following conditions:
1. Summer following Year 2: The Department awards $2000 to second year students to devote their full attention to their Preliminary Essay, subject to the condition that they complete 11 of their 12 required courses by 11th week of the Spring quarter.
2. Summer following Year 3: Each student admitted in 2007 and later will receive $3000 (as part of her fellowship package) subject to the condition that she submit (1) a brief report to the Director of Graduate Studies and the members of her chat committee that describes her work (during the winter and spring quarters) toward formulating a dissertation project, and (2) a plan of research for the summer that will lead, after the second chat in the fall, to a Topical by the beginning of the Winter quarter of her fourth year.
3. Summer following Year 4: Each student admitted in 2007 and later will receive $3000 (as part of her fellowship package) subject to the condition that she has successfully passed her Topical and made some further progress (beyond the Topical) on the dissertation, as judged by her committee.
Students admitted in 2007 and later who do not meet the condition for funding after either Year 3 or 4 at the required times can petition the department to receive the funding after Year 5, subject to the same conditions.
