Summer Funding

The Department offers the following summer stipends to graduate students subject to the following conditions:
1. Summer following Year One: Students will receive $3000 (as part of their fellowship package), subject to the condition that they complete 5 of their 12 required courses, and the first-year seminar, by 11th week of the Spring quarter.
2. Summer following Year Two
: Students will receive $3000 (as part of their fellowship package) to devote their full attention to their Preliminary Essay, subject to the condition that they complete 11 of their 12 required courses in a way that satisfies the Distribution Requirement by 11th week of the Spring quarter.
3. Summer following Year Three
: Students will receive $3000 (as part of their fellowship package) subject to the condition that they (1) hold a formal dissertation chat meeting on the basis of a preliminary Dissertation Sketch by the 7th week of the Spring quarter, and that they (2) submit a brief report to the Director of Graduate Studies and the members of their chat committee by the 8th week of the Spring quarter that describes the work toward formulating a dissertation project and lays out a plan of research for the summer that will lead, after the second chat in the Fall, to a Topical by the beginning of the Winter quarter of their fourth year.
4. Summer following Year Four
: Students will receive $3000 (as part of their fellowship package) subject to the conditions that they (1) have successfully passed the Topical by the third week of their 11th quarter (normally Winter quarter of 4th year), (2) have made some further progress (beyond the Topical) on the dissertation, as judged by their committee by the end of the year, and (3) submit a report of progress beyond the Topical to members of the dissertation committee and the Director of Graduate Studies by the 8th week of the Spring quarter. (Note: for students admitted before 2010, the condition remains that students will receive $3000 (as part of their fellowship package) subject to the conditions that they (1) have successfully passed the Topical and made some further progress (beyond the Topical) on the dissertation, as judged by their committee, and that they (2) submit a report of progress beyond the Topical to members of the dissertation committee and the Director of Graduate Studies by the 8th week of the Spring quarter.)
 For students admitted prior to 2012, specific arrangements communicated in a letter from the Dean of the Humanities Division apply. In addition, the above conditions, where applicable, also apply.
